I'm deployed to Fob Salerno, the main Fob in Khost. I thought you'd like these few pictures I have of my fallen brother.
I only met SFC Bowen in passing a few times; I rode with him on several convoys between Salerno and Camp Clark. He took a bunch of pictures for me from the gunner's point of view and I took a couple pictures of him when they dropped me off. He was a great guy who died doing a job he loved.  Everyone who knew him, his Army family here, was devastated.
I was friends with LTC Berrittinni who was in the same hmmwv and also died at the burn center in San Antonio.

Here are the answers sent by you:

Lisa Ann Torres, Soldiers' Angel: I would guess that Collin was breaking a beer bottle. My husband does the same
thing.

Sammy James: Was he trying to open a beer bottle?

And the winner is:

SGT Ryan Wachter (C CO 1-175th INF):
Though the video is sort of dark I know exactly what that Sergeant is doing just by his stance. He has shown this to me hundreds of times! What this great NCO is doing is demonstrating a beer bottle trick that requires 1 Dime and 1 beer bottle. Collin always said that Budweiser bottles work better than others. First, drink the beer, of course. Second, place the dime in the empty bottle. Third, roll the dime inside the bottle so it is constantly riding around the sides and bottom of the bottle. Lastly, take the palm of your hand and hit down on the neck of the bottle just right which will cause the whole bottom of the bottle to blow out. Collin told me that the dime causes tiny slices in the glass causing the bottom to be weak and hitting down the neck puts pressure inside blowing out the glass. It was always great to watch him do that, I tried many times but never got it but than again I was always trying this trick with a hard Heinekin bottle.

Thank you for your answers!

It was my honor to know such an outstanding man, husband, father & brother-in-arms!  I continue to think and pray for you and the girls.  My heart breaks for your loss.  Collin was an exceptional NCO.  In these pictures, he is standing up in front of all of Camp Clark to make a point to Brigadier General Livingston about something he believed strongly in.  This is how I will always remember him.  Standing up for his convictions and doing the right thing [...]

"Collin was a great man and a strong soldier.  He was very serious about his work and always a professional.  We'll never forget him.  Attached is a picture of him with his team in the Camp Clark Dining Facility.  We were watching LTC Drake present some folks with certificates of appreciation."

Dedication Ceremony Slides

April 1st
Sent by MAJ Christopher Cronin: Dedication Ceremony
Yesterday, we had a dedication ceremony for Collin, Shawn and Rick.  Each of the places we dedicated truly fit and aligned with our memories of them.
I have attached a picture of the gazebo or "the stable", as I am sure that Collin referred to it with you.   Captain McDill and Staff Sergeant Tooker spent a tremendous amount of time getting it put together to honor him.  Everyday (and especially at night) the soldiers, sailors and airmen here still get to have a cigar with him.  It is a fitting tribute, as he worked hard each day and relaxed with his friends with a cigar.

Here are a few pictures of the smoke shack, now "Bowen's Smoke Shack". [...] There will also be a sign on the 4x4 between the 2 sides made of wood with "In Memory of SFC Bowen, "Let's Burn One" etched into it, because that's what he always used to say.

He
went to Afghanistan to protect the land. As you know he volunteered to
go. On new years day he watched the sunrise from far away, as the warm
glow would appear his fate was near. True to the warrior in him and his
fighting spirit and refusal to give up, the lord could see, so he
softly whispered “Collin come to me”. He made his last stand as his
family held his hand. Now at Arlington he will lay and rest with the
best of the best. To our fallen hero, which we all love, may you rest

in peace in Heaven up above.

By R.J. Pasant, Fairmount

To my fallen hero, Collin, thank you for your meritorious service to the
country. No person was ever honored for what they received. Honor has been the
reward for what they gave and, in the end, it’s not the years in your life that
count, it’s the life in your years.
