Memorial Run/Walk Saturday
Published: Tuesday, July 8, 2008 9:08 AM EDT

The City of Marion will host the first Collin Bowen Memorial Run/Walk at 9 a.m. Saturday. The race will be a 5K (3.1 miles) and the fun walk will be two miles on the walkway.

Registration is from 8 to 8:30 a.m., or you can pre-register by printing a form from beyondthefinish.org and submitting it to Stacy Henderson in the mayor’s office. The cost is $20 for the race, $10 for the walk. All participants will receive a T-shirt.

Collin was from Marion and lost his life earlier this year while serving in Afghanistan. The scholarship will go to a local boy or girl who demonstrates qualities similar to Collin’s: dedication, loyalty, compassion and determination.

Jeff Foster of the Indiana Pacers will be the honorary starter and will be available for autographs after the event. The Patriot Riders will be on hand to lead the runners.

Congratulations 2008 Collin J Bowen Memorial Scholarship Recipients!

We would like to congratulate the following inaugural 2008 Scholarship recipients:

Katie L. Alter – Oak Hill HS, $1000

Ryan Alan Jumper – Marion HS, $1000

Kelsey Kirkpatrick – Eastbrook HS, $1000

They were chosen from a pool of truly remarkable candidates. We are honored by all of the outstanding young men and women who applied for the Scholarship. The quality of all the applicants made it a very difficult selection process. Grant County is lucky to have such oustanding men and women in their community.

We will be presenting the Scholarships to the candidates at the Collin J. Bowen Memorial Run/Walk this Saturday, July 12th, at 9am. We welcome all of you to come out and congratulate them and join in the celebration of Collin's life.

500 Festival Memorial Service - Click here to see newscast

It is an honored tradition each May during the 500 Festival Memorial Service, presented by Rolls-Royce, to remember the men and women who have given their lives in the defense of freedom. The service begins at 11:00 a.m. on the north steps of the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, in downtown Indianapolis on Friday, May 23, 2008.  Families of Hoosier servicemen and women who have died during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom will be recognized during the Memorial Service.

There will be a private reception at the Columbia Club prior to the Memorial service.  The reception is for families of our fallen soldiers.  At the end of the reception, Gov. Mitch Daniels will make a special presentation to the families of those who have lost their lives in the past year.

Perry Hall Memorial Day Ceremony

The annual Perry Hall Memorial Day Ceremony has been scheduled for Friday, May the 23rd, starting at 9:30am.  As always, the event will be held at the Perry Hall Elememtary School.  The program will include patriotic songs performed by the school's youth choir and the placement of a wreath in memory of all Perry Hall residents who have sacrificed their lives in their defense of America.  Additionally, there will be a special recognition of SFC Collin J. I never knew him, but wish I had.
My daughter never knew him, but I wish she had met him.
My wife had never met him, but I wish she had.
It is because of the courage, dedication and honor of people like him,
that we are able to live free today and will continue to live free.
